Ranking your Website | Essay Setup Yoast SEO Tools: Yoast SEO has become one of the best SEO plugins. So, when designing a web page with WordPress, it must be one of your essentials.
In this article I will explain step by step how to configure Yoast SEO to get the most out of it. When you finish reading the post, you will have your plugin perfectly configured and you will also understand (at last) what each of its functionalities are for.
Yoast SEO is a WordPress plugin created by Team Yoast and designed to help you improve some SEO aspects of your website. In addition, it helps you optimize the content of your pages and articles.
It is one of the indispensable plugins for WordPress, used by both SEO experts and by people with less knowledge about web positioning.
Do not think that simply by installing this plugin you will receive the services of an SEO consultant (for free) or you will become an expert in web positioning by magic.
It is true that it is a very useful SEO plugin, but it will not help if you configure it without knowing exactly what you are doing. Do not forget that who can really help you improve the positioning of your website is a professional in this field, or yourself if you have enough knowledge and time. If you want to improve the SEO of your website, I leave this article on how to position my website in the first places of Google.
The Yoast SEO plugin works as a kind of assistant to configure certain parameters of your website related to search engines, especially Google. If you configure it correctly, they will understand more easily the content of your website.
It is the most used and important SEO plugin for WordPress, although some time ago we are seeing how little by little a new SEO plugin called Rank Math is gaining popularity.
How to install the Yoast SEO plugin in WordPress
If you want to install Yoast SEO on your WordPress, you must go to the plugins section of your admin and click on “Add new”.
Now type Yoast SEO in the search bar and click on the “Install now” button.
Then, you have to activate it, by clicking the button, and the plugin will appear in the installed plugins section. In addition, you will see that a new tab has been created in the left sidebar of your WordPress with a menu of the tool itself. And, Activate the Yoast SEO plugin.
How to configure Yoast SEO step by step
Now I will explain each of the sections of the menu so you can configure this plugin step by step. Let’s get started!
1.Configure Yoast SEO: general settings:
General: In this section we can find three tabs: deshboard, features and webmaster tools.
On the deshboard we can see if there is an SEO problem that detects the plugin or warnings generated by the tool itself.
Features: In features we can activate or deactivate a few features of the plugin:
- SEO analysis: when activated, Yoast will offer you suggestions on how to improve the SEO of a text (keyword density, internal links, external links, title, meta description, etc.).
- Readability analysis: if you activate it, you will see tips and advice to improve the readability of your text, as well as its structure and style.
- Essential content: it serves to mark and filter those texts or articles that you consider important on your website.
- Text link counter: counts, on the one hand, the outgoing links of a text and, on the other, the internal links that link to that text. In short, it helps you improve the structure of the internal linking of your website.
- XML site maps: it is important that you activate it if you want Yoast SEO to automatically generate the XML sitemap of your website. You can also create it with Screaming Frog, or if you know HTML code manually in a notebook and save it with the extension .XML.
- Integration with Ryte: check the indexing of your website to see if it is accessible by search engines and users.
- Administration bar menu: when activated, you will see links to third-party tools with various functionalities in the Yoast administration bar menu.
- Security – without advanced adjustments for the authors: very useful to prevent the invited authors of your blog from changing certain settings such as changing the canonical label, choosing between nofollow / follow, or removing any post from the search results (noindex).
Webmaster Tools: And to end this section, you have the Webmaster Tools tab. Here you can check the webmaster tools of Baidu, Bing, Google and Yandex.
Configure Yoast SEO: webmasters tools
This section will help you connect your Google Search Console account to your website using a code that will be provided by the Search Console itself. Remember that it is not the only way to verify your account, but one of the easiest and fastest.
If your website is already verified, you can skip this step ?
2.Configure Yoast SEO: search engine appearance
Search Engine Appearance: This is one of the most important sections that you have to configure correctly in Yoast SEO to get the most out of it.
Here we can choose the type of separator that we want to appear in the titles of the pages and entries.
From here you can also edit the title and description of your home page and your blog (entries page).
In Knowledge Graph and Schema.org you will simply have to choose if your website represents a person or an organization and enter the name. This information will appear as metadata on your site.
Content Types: In this section you can choose the appearance in the search engine of each content of your website, its title and description. In addition, you can decide what types of content (post, pages and templates) you want to index so that they appear in the search results.
Next, I will explain to you what each of the settings of the Inputs are for. The others are configured following the same steps.
First of all, you have to decide if you want your website entries to be indexed or not. You will obviously want it! In this way, they can appear in the search results and in the XML Sitemap. Users will find your post and you can position your content.
Next, you must choose whether you want the post publication date to appear in the search results or not. It is completely optional, but hiding it will prevent the CTR of your old content from going down, as users will always prefer current and fresh articles.
We continue and find Yoast SEO goal box. What is this? It is simply the Yoast box that appears in each of the entries to customize the title and description, among other things. Don’t forget to click on “show”!
You will wonder: if I have already activated the previous box, why can I choose the title and meta description here? Because this option is to set a title for all entries, that is, the title will be automatically adjusted according to the variables you have entered without touching anything.
Remember that they are global settings; Then you can modify it manually in each of the entries.
Media: It’s time for multimedia files, those images and videos that you attach in a post or page.
Yoast recommends setting it to “Yes.” Why? So that when a user finds a photo of your website in their search and clicks, it redirects them to the post or page that has that photo attached, and not to the page of the file.
Taxonomies: We will see the settings for the categories and labels. As you will see, it looks a lot like the settings on the previous tab Types of content.
First, you will have to choose whether you want the categories to be indexed or not, design a template for the title with variables and modify the meta description. I recommend you modify and customize these parameters manually in each of the categories.
The indexing or not of the categories depends on the type of website and the strategy that you are going to carry out. Remember to contribute valuable content, optimize them and not upload duplicate content. They are a great opportunity to ranch!
Let’s go with the tags. It is configured exactly like the categories, but in this case it is not recommended to index them. In this way, we avoid duplicate content, since many articles can share the same tags.
Finally, in Formats it is recommended to leave it inactive, since it is deprecated and could generate duplicate content, since each theme includes its own formats.
In category URLs it is best to remove the category prefix to make the URLs more friendly and shorter. On the other hand, many themes and plugins use this prefix and, if you delete it, errors may arise, so I recommend you make sure before.
Files: It is time to modify the settings of author files, file by date and special pages.
In author files it is recommended to deactivate the option if there is only one author in the blog and activate it if there are several. In both cases we are not interested in displaying the author page in the search results (not indexing) to avoid duplicate content.
In the case of files by date, it is best to keep it inactive to get rid of junk URLs in the middle and not show them in search results (noindex).
To finish on special pages we can edit the SEO titles of the search pages and 404 pages (you can leave it as is). By default they are like noindex and follow.
Breadcrumbs: In this tab you can insert the famous breadcrumbs. In general, you can activate them from the settings of your theme, but this SEO plugin gives you the option in case your theme does not include them.
It is interesting to activate bread crumbs for online stores or for websites with highly hierarchical content. Otherwise, it is not recommended.
RSS feed: RSS (Really Simple Syndication) or feeds are very useful to attract qualified traffic to our blog. The Yoast SEO plugin helps you prevent other websites from plagiarizing your content through customizable variables.
3.Set up Yoast SEO: Google Seach Console:
This section showed the tracking errors of your website (desktop, smartphone and simple phone) thanks to the information provided by Google Search Console.
It is currently empty, since Google has closed the system that provided data on these errors, so now you must go directly to the Search Console to see them.
4.Set up Yoast SEO: Social> Accounts
Social: This section refers to your accounts and profiles in the different social networks.
Here you can place the URLs of your social profiles, and in the case of Twitter your user without @.
If your website is configured to represent a person (as in my case), here you cannot change the accounts of your social networks. To do this, you will have to exit the Yoast plugin, access the menu on the left of WordPress, go to Users and Your profile.
Facebook: When activating Facebook Open Graph metadata, a new box will appear in all the entries and pages of your website, where you can customize the title, description and image of the content you share on Facebook.
In default settings you can place an image that appears in all those contents in which you have not put a prominent image and share them on Facebook.
It is always best to place a personalized image in each of your posts manually. This option will save you from a hurry if you ever forget to put the main photo in a post.
Twitter: You can also activate the option to add Twitter card meta data to show a preview (images and text excerpt) of the shared content.
Pinterest: Like Facebook, Pinterest uses the same Open Graph metadata. You can get more out of the content you share on Pinterest by adding the meta tag in the checkbox provided by Yoast SEO.
5.Configure Yoast SEO: tools
Believe me that this section will save you a lot of headaches, because Yoast SEO offers you the possibility to modify certain very important web settings:
- Import and export: with this tool you will save a lot of time if you have or work with several websites, since it allows you to import and export the Yoast SEO plugin settings to other sites.
- It also allows you to import the configuration of other SEO plugins, very useful, for example, if you want to install Yoast on another website with the settings of the previous plugin.
- File editor: from here you can modify your robots.txt and .htaccess file. It is not the best option, since it is best to access the server via FTP.
- Mass editor: you can easily modify the titles and meta descriptions of your posts and pages in bulk (without editing one page at a time).
